The Accomack County Board of Education voted to table a “treatment of transgender students” policy at its Tuesday work session as it hopes to make the policy more specific.

The tabled policy was a model policy for Virginia public schools. By fall 2021, the school board must pass a policy to give transgender students more freedoms and protections in the school system.

Several board members voiced concerns that the tabled policy did not provide school administrators with specific enough guidelines on how to handle different situations.

Additionally, board members felt that the policy could negatively impact the safety of students, including transgender students.

In 2020, the Virginia General Assembly approved legislation that requires all Virginia public schools to adopt a “treatment of transgender students” policy outlined by the Virginia Department of Education.

Schools are permitted to make the policy more comprehensive than the department of education outlined.
