Accomack rezones land for Rocket Lab manufacturing site of Neutron

The site of a former chicken farm could become a rocket ranch.

On Wednesday, the Accomack County Board of Supervisors approved a motion to rezone 28 acres of land west of the Wallops Gate from agricultural to industrial.

The rezoning will allow Virginia’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport to build a 150,000-square-foot building that would manufacture Rocket Lab’s Neutron rocket.

In 2024, Rocket Lab plans to send humans to space in the proposed Neutron rocket from the NASA Wallops Flight Facility.

Rocket Lab unveiled plans for its Neutron rocket, an advanced 8-ton payload class launch vehicle tailored for mega-constellation deployment, interplanetary missions and human spaceflight, on March 1, 2021. Neutron will build on Rocket Lab’s proven experience developing the reliable workhorse Electron launch vehicle, the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually since 2019.

In addition to approving the rezoning, the board also approved two conditional use permits. The first allows the development of more than 10 acres in the Industrial Zoning District, while the second allows the storage of hazardous chemicals and materials on the land.

All three motions passed unanimously.

“From an aerospace point of view, this puts Accomack County, Wallops Island, NASA (and) Virginia Space in the world view,” Board Chair Ron Wolff said during Wednesdayboard meeting. “This is humongous.”
