Butterflies are very particular about where they lay their eggs because the caterpillars of each species usually eat only one or two types of plants, called their host plant. For example, one of the Bel Air Five butterflies, the Silvery Checkerspot, lays eggs on two plants: Wingstem (Verbesina alternifolia) and Ten-Petal Sunflower (Helianthus decapetalus), according to the news release.
