The 76th annual Howard County Fair will return Saturday to the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship.

Exhibit entries have already begun, with county residents bringing their arts, crafts and non-perishables to be judged last weekend. Entries for baked goods, homegrown fruits and vegetables, flowers, crops and other items are being accepted at various times this week.

The fair’s official opening day is Saturday, and it will be open daily through Aug. 13. The fairgrounds open each day at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. For a full schedule of events, visit howardcountyfairmd.com.

The fair was held virtually in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic; it returned in person in 2021.

Mickey Day, president of the Howard County Fair Association, said he is excited that the association will be able to offer a fair full of activities again this year.

“We are looking very much forward to being able to come back and enjoy the agricultural exhibits … as well as ride the rides,” he said. “We’re just super excited that everyone’s going to be able to be out.”

The annual weeklong event features pony rides, pig races, bingo, magic shows, sheep dog herding performances, as well as amusement rides and games, a beer and wine garden, a bingo hall, food vendors and live music daily.

Agricultural and horticultural displays and open class contests for cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, and poultry are on the schedule along with 4-H and FFA events, including livestock shows.

Anyone can enter in the open class portion of the fair, with its competitive classes for vegetables, fruits, honey, farm crops, crafts, baking, sewing, photography, fine arts, woodworking, flowers, livestock, horses and more. To enter competitive exhibits in 4-H/FFA categories, youth must be enrolled in the Howard County 4-H Program or the Howard County Chapter FFA. Rules are listed online at https://howardcountyfairmd.com/fair-book/.

Entry tickets can be purchased in person or online for those 13 and older for $10. Adults 62 and older pay $5. Children ages 12 and younger may enter for free when accompanied by an adult. Season passes for unlimited admission for one individual can be purchased at the admission gate or the fair office for $40.
