The 17-year-old boy who went missing Wednesday afternoon while swimming at the beach in Ocean City has not been located as of Thursday morning.

Members of the Ocean City Beach Patrol responded to reports of several swimmers in distress in the area of 112th street shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to a Thursday morning news release.

Lifeguards spotted a group who appeared to be struggling to swim. Three of the swimmers were able to exit the water while Beach Patrol personnel tried to rescue another who was being swept away in a rip current.

Ocean City Communications received a call about the same swimmer, the release stated, and dispatched the Ocean City Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard and Natural Resources Police to help with the rescue.

Beach Patrol deployed 50 Surf Rescue Technicians to search the water. The Coast Guard said a 47-foot motor life boat from Station Ocean City and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City also participated in the search.
