The Chesapeake Bay region, which includes the Potomac River, is a significant setting in African American history. This region was a gateway for the first blacks brought from Africa to the colonies. Throughout the mid 1800’s the bay and its rivers were important routes along the underground railroad. After the war, newly emancipated blacks found their way to the Chesapeake shore, where they literally built the region’s economy and shaped its culture
This livestream history program was originally designed to be presented on a moving vessel on the Potomac River. It ran three hours with over one-hundred slides, offered live narration by Captain Bill Washington, and gave the passengers the unique perspective of history combined with being able to see for themselves the contemporary river. The cruise encompassed the Washington Channel, Anacostia River, and the Potomac River.
We anticipate in-person programs will start back up sometime in 2021. Until then, join us for an online/virtual edition of Moments in Black History on the Potomac River with Captain Bill Washington.
