Last year, when Tim West graduated from high school, a lot of his classmates wanted to go to Senior Week in Ocean City, Maryland.

At his school, Spring Grove Area High School, it was considered a rite of passage from high school to adulthood.

But last year, everything was different. His graduation was different. Spring Grove had a drive-in ceremony and limited attendance. He and his fellow members of the class of 2020 received their diplomas on a small stage in the middle of a field.

Thousands flocked to Ocean City on Labor Day weekend in 2020. This year, the beach community is expecting larger crowds during Senior Week since COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted.

The pandemic, then still in its nascent stages, also changed what his classmates did after graduating. Some canceled plans to go to the beach to celebrate. Others, including West, still went.

“It was different,” West said. “It definitely was a lot of fun, a lot of people. Corona hit Ocean City, and lot of things were closed, but it was a way for people to go outside and be free.”
