A young woman fatally shot after a man shot at her moving car has been identified as Maricruz Sanchez, Delaware State Police said.
The 20-year-old from Milford died April 2, days after being shot in her car on March 31.
A mother of two, she “was an innocent victim,” police said.
At about 3:15 p.m., Sanchez was driving westbound on Route 14 in the area of Sandbox Road. An unknown suspect in a dark-colored SUV crossed the double yellow line and pulled alongside her vehicle.
The suspect fired a gun “numerous times” into Sanchez’s car before fleeing the scene, police said. Sanchez lost control of the car after being shot and crashed into a nearby field, police said.
Autopsies show Sanchez was shot multiple times in the upper torso.
The investigation is in the early stages, but it appears Sanchez was targeted in retaliation for an earlier incident she was not involved in, police said.
