A man has been charged in an armed robbery at Rise Up Coffee and a burglary at The Greek Pita Place, according to police, and charges are pending in burglaries at two more Salisbury businesses.
A Salisbury Police Department news release shows officers responded Wednesday morning to overnight burglaries at The Greek Pita Place, Family Dollar and Viet Taste. All three businesses are in the 700 and 800 blocks of South Salisbury Boulevard.
In each burglary, a suspect broke glass to gain entry, police said, and then removed items before fleeing the scene.
Investigators identified 24-year-old Ernest Adkins of Salisbury as a potential suspect. A warrant for his arrest in The Greek Pita Place robbery was issued Wednesday, according to police.
At about 3:40 p.m. that same day, officers were called to Rise Up Coffee at 529 Riverside Drive for an armed robbery. Police said two employees, a 27-year-old man and 24-year-old woman, told them the suspect threatened them with a knife and demanded money from the cash register.
The suspect then left on a bicycle with the cash. Investigators were able to identify Adkins as the person responsible for the robbery based on information obtained at the scene, according to police.
Officers and detectives canvased the area, police said, and found Adkins not long after near Light Street and Newton Street, where he tried to run after noticing the police presence.
There was a brief chase before officers were able to apprehend Adkins and disarm him of the knife. He was taken to the Salisbury Police Department, where a search revealed he had what was believed to be crack cocaine on him.
Adkins had his initial appearance before a District Court Commissioner after he was released to the Wicomico County Detention Center. Police said he’s been charged with the following:
- Second- and fourth-degree burglary
- Armed robbery
- First- and second-degree assault
- Malicious destruction of property
- Wear and carry of a weapon
- Possession of a controlled dangerous substance
The investigations are still ongoing and charges are pending in the Family Dollar and Viet Taste burglaries, according to police.
