The Talbot County Council voted 3-2 Tuesday night in favor of relocating the much-debated Confederate Talbot Boys statue to a Virginia battleground.
Council members Frank Divilio, Pete Lesher and Corey Pack voted in favor of an administrative resolution to relocate the monument from the courthouse lawn in Easton, while council members Chuck Callahan and Laura Price voted against.
The statue will be moved to the Cross Keys Battlefield in Harrisonburg, Virginia, which is a private park under the custody, care and control of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation. The costs associated with relocating the structure will be covered by private funds.
The move comes amid a legal battle in the form of a federal lawsuit filed against the county in May that demanded the statue be relocated. The complaint challenged the continued existence of a Confederate monument on the lawn of the Talbot County Circuit Court as “unconstitutional and illegal.”

The 13-foot monument is a memorial to a local regiment that fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War. It’s the last Confederate monument on public land in the state, according to the ACLU of Maryland, which has been helping to represent plaintiffs in the federal lawsuit.
Singer and Easton native Maggie Rogers was among those who took to social media ahead of Tuesday evening’s meeting to encourage people to show up in support of the statue’s removal.
