Equestrian fans can buy tickets for the Maryland 5 Star beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. This year’s event will run from Oct. 13 through Oct. 16.

Described as a “fall Preakness,” the high-level equestrian competition will again be held at the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Elkton in Cecil County. Unlike the Preakness Stakes, Maryland’s more established major horse event, the 5 Star involves the disciplines of riding, driving and vaulting, not oval racing.

The Maryland 5 Star, which debuted last year, is just one of two events with the Fédération Equestre Internationale’s highest distinction in the United States, and one of seven worldwide. Competitors will begin the four-day event with dressage, followed by cross-country and show-jumping.

Last year’s exhibition of the Olympic sport of eventing brought 20,886 spectators and 184 competitors to Fair Hill, according to a news release from organizers. Three-time U.S. Olympian Boyd Martin became the first American to win an event with the 5-star designation since 2008.

The equestrian event will take place at a facility in northeast Maryland where state and private investors have spent millions of dollars on improvements. Maryland Sports hopes to rival the economic impact of Kentucky’s 5 Star event.

Tickets will be available at Maryland5Star.us/tickets.
